Working out alone can feel a little dull sometimes. The music in your headphones is good, but it’s not the same as having someone next to you who keeps you going, makes you laugh, and pushes you to do that extra round. Finding a sport buddy turns exercise into something you actually look forward to.
1. Start with our platform
First things first: our site is made for exactly this. Create your profile on SportMate Züri, write what sports you like, when you’re free, and where in Zürich you are. Post something simple like “Looking for a running mate on weekday evenings near Kreis 4” or “Want a yoga buddy for Sunday morning along the lake”. It’s easy, direct, and you’ll meet people who are on the same page. Click here to discover our sport groups: https://www.sportmateszueri.ch/groups
2. Smile and say hi in real-life :)
You know those moments when you’re in the gym or outside by the lake and you see someone doing pretty much the same thing as you? That’s your cue. A smile, a quick “Hey, I usually do this circuit on Tuesdays — you?” can open a conversation. Many posts say just reaching out like that leads to finding a great workout partner.
3. Ask around your circle
Check your neighbours, colleagues, old friends: maybe someone already does a bit of sport but would love a partner. You might say: “Hey, I’m going for a run this Thursday evening, want to join?” It’s less pressure because you’re already connected. Experts highlight how important it is to look around your existing network.
4. Join a class or local event
Choose something fun and social — a yoga class, a running meetup, the beach-volleyball evening near the lake. In these settings you’ll meet people who already like what you like. Afterwards maybe ask somebody: “Hey, do you go often? Want to team up next week?” It’s a natural way to find someone.
5. Commit together
Once you find someone who seems like a good fit, set a time that works for both of you and treat it as a little appointment. “Same time next Tuesday?” Make it realistic. Talk about what you each want to do (run, swim, gym), what your schedule is. Studies show having a “buddy” improves attendance and motivation.
